Doing Business with Sharon Alister
Read on below to learn about Sharon Alister, The Alister Approach to Fixed Income Investing, and how we work with new clients in a variety of financial institutions.
BONDS ARE ESSENTIAL.
Bonds are an essential component of nearly every person’s portfolio (with regard to individual bonds, not bond funds). They are typically viewed as a more conservative investment. This is because bonds provide a date at which the face amount of the bond is contractually obligated to be returned to the investor, provided the issuer does not default. Paired with this, bonds also provide a steady, predictable stream of income. These features make them attractive to many investors. This is especially true for risk-averse investors and investors approaching retirement.
WHAT IS THE ALISTER APPROACH TO FIXED INCOME PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT?
Fixed Income securities are an important component of an individual’s asset allocation mix, providing potential for returns, balance, and lower volatility. Active bond portfolio management may provide a wider universe of opportunity for an investor’s portfolio. It is also an effective tool in helping to manage risk (interest rate risk, credit risk) in the portfolio. Bond characteristics and the nature of bond markets are quite dynamic; indeed, active portfolio management facilitates an ongoing balancing of opportunity and risk.
Alister is an active bond portfolio advisor. She employs investment-grade securities in clients’ portfolios, with the objective of maximizing total return from the portfolio. Total return is the sum of interest payments received plus capital gains from portfolio’s holdings and transactions. The bond market faced by today’s investors is not the same faced by generations past. A basic, passive laddered bond portfolio, although easy to understand and implement, simply does not address many of the subtle intricacies that can have an impact on a fixed income portfolio.
HOW DO WE WORK WITH A NEW $500,000 INVESTOR?
(Our minimum client portfolio size.) First, we thoroughly discuss with you your financial needs and objectives, risk tolerance, and your current asset holdings. Next, we discuss your estate planning and insurance situations. Together, we determine an Asset Allocation Plan for your portfolio(s), and in some cases, we prepare a Review and Recommendations to discuss with your legal and tax advisors.
ARE YOU A STOCK INVESTOR LOOKING TO DIVERSIFY INTO BONDS?
We can help you accomplish this without a “wholesale” selling of your stock holdings. There are some sound strategies for raising cash from your portfolio that we can discuss and use. Of course, we would first help you determine an appropriate Asset Allocation Plan that reflects your risk tolerance and your financial objectives. Asset Allocation is the percentage of the whole that each of the major asset classes is to be: Cash, Stock, or Bonds.
